Hal Carnahan was born in Oakwood, Ohio, on November 5, 1941. He lived on a farm until he was 5 years old, and his father, Clarence Carnahan, answered the call to preach. His family moved to various parsonages in Ohio as Clarence followed his calling. Hal graduated from Pemberville (OH) High School. Prior to graduation, he enlisted in the Navy Reserve (1958). After graduation, he joined the Air Force, where he served as a flight commander and multi-engine mechanic.
In 1966, Hal played football for the Denver Broncos. After a short career in football, he returned to farming. Eventually, he migrated to the oil fields of Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado where he worked as a rig supervisor. He has five children from two previous marriages, and is currently married to Bess Ware Carnahan. They ranch in Wyoming.
Hal is proud of the research Bess has done regarding the Carnahan Clan, as well as the book she has published. He states: "Dad always had stories of his ancestors, and in the early 60's started researching the family genealogy. He tried following up on information obtained from Col. Hugh Carnahan. We worked on the genealogy over the years, without much success, due to too many ‘brick walls.’ Now we have it all!" |

As a Murphy, St. Clair, and Ware, I have always had a love for the Emerald Isle. After a career with an international air carrier, wherein I traveled to Ireland many times, I was fortunate to meet and marry Hal Carnahan. We spent our honeymoon tramping the rocky shores of Donegal, in search of Carnahan history and genealogy.
Currently, we are cattle ranchers in Fort Laramie, WY, but we return to Ireland as often as we can, in search of those elusive early Clan Cearnacháin members. When I embarked on this project, I went to my uncle Bob Ware for wisdom. He gave me the best advice I could have had for my genealogical work: "Check, re-check, and prove your work."
We are fascinated with the history of Ireland, especially as it relates to the early Cearnacháin Clan. Our work will continue. |

A good part of his adult life he has researched and explored the genealogies of most of the Carnahan lines in America and researched the family connections in Ireland. Much of this research was done the old fashioned way before computers, e-mail and the Internet. |
