Clann Cearnacháin, recognized officially by the Clans of Ireland, 2002.
In 2002, our research was submitted to The Clans of Ireland, Ltd., with a request that Clan Cearnacháin be recognized and catalogued.
Who are The Clans of Ireland? "The Irish Government instigated the establishment of The Clans of Ireland Ltd. in 1989 to coordinate the activities of the Irish Clans, and over two hundred and thirty Irish Clans are registered.
Requirements for Eligibility: An Irish Clan may be registered if the surname is either authoritatively documented as being of Irish origin, or has a documented presence in Ireland prior to the Great Famine. The Clans of Ireland Ltd. is charged by the Irish Government with maintaining standards and reserves the right to decline an application if eligibility cannot be established beyond reasonable doubt."
In 2002, research submitted to The Clans of Ireland Ltd. was reviewed by their board of directors and without a shadow of doubt, Cearnacháin was recognized as an Irish Clan, originated in the County Donegal and dating back in antiquity to the third centry A.D. as documented by ancient texts.
While Cearnacháin does not exist as a modern day surname, research has determined the following modern day surenames all derive from Cearnacháin: Cairnachan, Cairnochain, Cairnochan, Cairnochen, Cairnouchan, Cannon, Carnachan, Carnachane, Carnaghan, Carnahan, Carnathan, Carnichan, Carnigan, Carnochan, Carnochin, Carnoghan, Carnokeng, Carnokin, Carnoquhen, Carnuchan, Carnughan, Cernachan, Cornachan, Karnaghan, Kearnaghan, Kearnahan, Kermachin, Kernaghan, Kernahan, Kernan, Kerneghan, Kernehan, Kernochen, Kernohan and Quarnaquain.
